What a VirtuOz agent is not...
- A human. The VirtuOz agent is not a substitute for a real person. Rather, the two work together. The VirtuOz agent will never be as intelligent as a human individual. However, the agent can take over certain repetitive tasks, freeing a human employee to deal with more complex cases and to train the VirtuOz agent. It's an impressive example of teamwork between man and machine.
- A graphical avatar. Today's advanced technology can render life-like, 3D images to create animated graphical avatars. Avatars speak, but they do not listen and users cannot communicate with them (chat). The user is passive and there is no interaction. Nevertheless, avatar technology complements ours: avatars give a body to the head created by VirtuOz.
- A search engine. A search engine, even a semantic engine, is different from an agent in three key ways:
- No comprehension. The search engine recognizes each component of a request (the list of words), but it does not analyze the overall meaning (the sentence's verb, subject, object, etc.). For example, when entering "I don’t like Shanghai" in a search engine, chances are, the results will produce a list of hotels in Shanghai.
- No proactivity. The search engine is reactive. Once a request is entered, it responds with a list of results. In most cases, the operation will require the user to further specify his request to ensure he finds what he needs from the final results. At this point, an agent can take over.
- No sympathy. Do you ever say "Good bye" to Google ?
The agent is no better or worse than a search engine. It responds to a different need and the two technologies complement one another.
